Leading Lady Tournament Week 1: Update
I mentioned during the first post that I’d be posting updates on Thursday and Sunday. I might actually limit the update posts to once a week, especially if the numbers seem to have stagnated With that, let’s briefly look at where the numbers are for week one, as they stand now. Remember, you have till Monday at midnight to vote!
Leading with eight votes is the beautiful Ginger Rogers.
I must admit I really didn’t expect Ginger to be such a clear frontrunner. She received the most votes, right from the start, and she’s consistently held the top spot since voting opened. Very unexpected.
In second place with four votes is Jean Harlow.
I said last year that I wouldn’t declare my predictions anymore because they were hopelessly wrong. If I did tell you my predictions I would have had my money on Harlow. To me, she embodies the 1930s and I thought she’d blow past everyone. Now that’s not to say that between now and Monday she won’t gain traction, but I think it’s slim.
With three votes, and in third place, we have Ms. Bette Davis.
Bette was a long-shot in this decade and it’s not surprising she’s trailing behind. If Harlow doesn’t make a break for the top spot, I could see her losing to Davis. I don’t, however, see Davis winning this thing.
And tied with zero votes are Vivien Leigh and Claudette Colbert.
If I were a betting woman I’d have been thrown out from the start. Absolutely no love for Colbert AND Leigh? I’m really not sure why Leigh hasn’t garnered any votes because I know Gone With the Wind is so beloved. Is everyone secretly admitting that Scarlett O’Hara is annoying? As for Colbert, I have to wonder where all the screwball comedy fans are?
Those are the numbers for now. Voting closes Monday at midnight.

It was so difficult deciding who to vote for! I love all of these actresses.
Haha, just wait till I get to the other decades.
First of all, if I recall correctly, Ginger won Monty’s March Madness tournament last year, so, obviously, she is very beloved. I guess I’m not surprised she’s in the lead.
As for Bette (my choice), I think she would have fared better in the 1940’s, which, in fact, is the decade I think she embodies. I only voted for her in this round because she’s my #1 gal. For 30’s, I think Jean Harlow or Myrna Loy.
Also, Scarlett O’Hara IS annoying…but she also has some wonderful character traits, not the least of which are determination, perseverance, and a willingness to work hard.
I guess I need to see Ginger’s work from the 1930s! Yeah, I really debated what to do with Bette, and I actually had Myrna Loy in the 1940s before I dropped her entirely due to length. Next year I’ll be sure to switch them.
