News From the Lake for April 15th, 2015

News in a nutshell: Lifetime starts promoting their upcoming Marilyn Monroe movie, getTV celebrates Frank Capra, and what’s new on DVD and Blu-ray.

You might remember my reporting awhile back on Lifetime prepping a new biopic on Marilyn Monroe based on the biography by J. Randy Taraborrelli, The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe. Entertainment Tonight debuted the promo trailer last night, showing off Kelli Garner (above) as Marilyn and Susan Sarandon as her mother. The clip can be found at Lifetime’s website. Compared to past efforts, like Liz & Dick, this biopic looks in line with some of the better Marilyn made-for-TV films, particularly Blonde. Garner certainly looks more like Monroe than some other actresses who put on her platinum wig. Color me excited for this one! The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe airs on Lifetime, May 30th and 31st at 9pm.

Celebrate director Frank Capra’s 118th-birthday with getTV this May. The network will honor Capra with a two-day tribute, May 5th and May 17th with screenings of the director’s most iconic works including It Happened One Night (1934), Platinum Blonde, and American Madness (1932). A complete schedule for the month, as well as the complete Capra tribute, is available on the getTV website.

Warner Archive: Rosalind Russell fans will want to check out Warner Archive’s trio of Russell titles – Flight for Freedom (1943), Sister Kenny (1946), and The Velvet Touch (1948). The studio is also rereleasing four Samuel Goldwyn films: The Wedding Night and Barbary Coast (both 1935), Come and Get It (1936), and The Goldwyn Follies (1938). All of these can be purchased, manufactured on-demand, from Warner Archive direct.
