News From the Lake for July 8th, 2015

News in a nutshell: Paul Newman honored with a postage stamp, MeTV celebrates Dawn Wells, and what’s new on DVD and Blu

The United States Postal Service announced actor Paul Newman will be honored with a Forever Stamp, set for release September 18th. It’s been awhile since a star was honored with a stamp, the most recent being last year when TCM unveiled the honorary Charlton Heston stamp during the TCM Film Festival.

Gilligan’s Island fans might want to tune in to MeTV on Sunday, July 19th from 7-10pm as actress Dawn Wells (Maryann) hosts “Maryann’s Three Hour Tour.” The block will contain Wells’ favorite episodes of Gilligan’s Island, as well as an exclusive interview with the actress about her time on the island.

New on DVD and Blu-ray

Mill Creek: Mill Creek will release the 1935 adaptation of Crime and Punishment to DVD for the first time on September 15th. This is touted as an 80th anniversary addition although it’s doubtful any bonus content will accompany it.

Warner Archive: Warner Archive announced their crop of titles for the next two weeks. They include Run of the Arrow (1957), the complete first season of Lawman, Callaway Went Thataway (1951), The High Cost of Loving (1958), and Count Your Blessings (1959). If you’re interested in purchasing any of these on-demand titles you can do so at the Warner website.

  1. My rising high school senior had read Crime and Punishment so a month ago I had recorded TCM’s showing of the film, the one you have posted about. My son watched it with me and he was impressed and said it followed the plot of the book pretty well. He was surprised an old movie could be quite good!
