Summer Under the Stars- Richard Burton (August 2nd)
Some Reflection:
I was admittedly a bit stunned to learn we don’t have a tremendous amount of coverage on Richard Burton. As an actor, I’ve always placed him right alongside Laurence Olivier as one of grandmasters of the theater (said like Danny Kaye in White Christmas).

Richard Burton is fully and completely (and unabashedly) himself, and it absolutely radiates from the screen. I’ve seen a few of his films many, many times, but there’s so much I haven’t seen. As a performer he’s very much tied with Elizabeth Taylor, a fact which is simultaneously a blessing and a curse. So, if you only think of him as Marc Antony, take a look through the programming today!

If You Can Only Watch One:

Look Back in Anger (1959)
Granted, this is a WatchTCM viewing for most (4:45am PST). However, this beautiful British New Wave film from director Tony Richardson shows Burton at his earliest (and most raw). He’s young and fresh and it’s truly easy to see why he was such a captivating figure.
Swing back by tomorrow for a dive into the work of Kim Novak!
