Summer Under the Stars- Robert Redford (August 18th)

Some Reflection

Robert Redford is…

Robert Redford. I still remember my first Robert Redford movie (The Horse Whisperer, for those who care). I was 12 years old and even then, I thought he was a complete and utter dreamboat. Then I saw what he looked like in the sixties…

Of course, Robert Redford is so much more than a pretty face. As a performer, he’s developed and evolved so much as the years have passed. Like Jane Fonda (whose day we celebrated earlier this month) he’s a legend of ‘New Hollywood’ and there’s more good stuff then can really fit into a 24 hour period.

A Career in Review:

Inside Daisy Clover (1965)

The Chase (1966)

This Property is Condemned (1966)

Barefoot in the Park (1967)

Ticklish Business Episode #73: Barefoot in the Park (1967)

The Sting (1973)

Brubaker (1980)

If You Can Only Watch One

This is a pick I’m struggling with here. Admittedly, some of my favorite Redford roles aren’t airing today.

That doesn’t mean there aren’t a few good picks to choose from! For those searching for an essential, I have to call out Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which is airing at 11:00pm EST. The movie features Redford opposite the always amazing Paul Newman in a gorgeous revisionist western. However, with works like Inside Daisy Clover, Out of Africa, and The Candidate, there really is something for everyone today.

  1. Three Days of the Condor and The Natural are my choices of great delight as must see Robert Redford, while watching Max von Sydow and Faye Dunaway working their craft in ‘Condor’, and the irresistible full cast of ‘The Natural’ with the great journeyman Darren McGavin! And how can I not praise ‘Jeremiah Johnson’?
