Summer Under the Stars- Ingrid Bergman (August 29th)

Some Reflection:

Ingrid Bergman is an icon of cinema of the absolutely highest order.

I mean…

I watched Casablanca for the first time probably twenty-five years ago and this perfect movie stuns me with its beauty even today. It still makes me cry.

Of course, Ingrid Bergman was more than Casablanca. In fact, she was alot more than Ilsa Lund. The list of reviews we have speaks for itself. Her screen career lasted almost fifty years and with each role, she reminded Hollywood just why she was so good.

She could say so much with only a look.

A Career in Review:

TCM Presents: Casablanca 70th Anniversary Edition (1942)

Gaslight (1944)

The Bells of St. Mary’s (1945)

Spellbound (1945)

Notorious (1946)

The Two Mrs. Carrolls (1947)

Fear (1954)

Indiscreet (1958)

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958)

Cactus Flower (1969)

If You Can Only Watch One:

TCM is mixing things up a bit for me with this schedule! Many of these Bergman’s are actually first time watches for yours truly. So, I will have to (sheepishly) give an unoriginal answer.

Okay…. I won’t say Casablanca, despite how much I want to talk about one of the most perfect movies to hit the big screen.

No, kids. I won’t do that. Though… we’re all about due for another Casablanca rewatch. However, in the timeslot right before the 1942 classic, TCM has coyly dropped in another essential, Gaslight (1944).

The drama features Bergman opposite Charles Boyer, Joseph Cotten and a suuuuuuper young Angela Lansbury. Bergman stars as a woman who fears she’s starting to go mad in the wake of things happening in her mansion. There’s a lot more to it than that… trust me!

Bergman is a traditionally brilliant in the role and was recognized with her first Academy Award win against the likes of Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Greer Garson and Barbara Stanwyck.

Gaslight airs at 3:45pm EST.
